Sun Care for Every SkIn Tone: What You Need to Know

There’s a persistent myth that darker skin tones don’t need sun protection. It’s wrong, and it’s worth clearing up properly.

What Melanin Actually Does

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colour. It does provide some natural protection against UV radiation – darker skin tones have more melanin and as a result are less prone to burning than lighter skin tones.

But “less likely to burn” is not the same as “protected.” Everyone – regardless of skin tone – is exposed to UVA rays, which cause long-term skin damage, premature ageing and can contribute to skin cancer. UV damage doesn’t always announce itself with a burn.

A 2021 report from the British Association of Dermatology confirmed that while skin cancer rates are lower in people with darker skin, when it does occur it is often diagnosed later and at a more advanced stage – partly because it’s assumed to be less of a risk.

SPF for Different Skin Tones

The choice of SPF should be based on how easily your skin burns and how long you’re planning to be in the sun, not just on skin tone.

Fair, light or freckled skin – Burns quickly, very limited natural protection. SPF 50 every time, reapplied regularly.

Medium or olive skin – Some natural protection but still burns with prolonged exposure. SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 for long days.

Dark or deep skin – Lower burn risk but UV damage still occurs. SPF 15 to 30 depending on exposure, with broad-spectrum UVA protection.

The UVA star rating matters for everyone. Broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection is what you’re looking for, regardless of SPF factor

Finding Formulas That Work for You

One of the most common reasons people with darker skin tones avoid sunscreen is the white cast left by some formulas. It’s a legitimate barrier. Malibu’s lighter-textured formulas – particularly the dry oils and gels – are designed to absorb quickly and work without leaving residue on the skin. Find what works for you, because a sunscreen you’ll actually use is always better than a perfect formula sitting unused on the shelf.

Sun Care for Every Body – Really

“Sun Protection for Every Body” isn’t just a line. Different skin tones, different approaches, different products. The goal is the same: skin that’s protected, whatever the summer looks like.
