How Much Sunscreen Should You Actually Apply?

Here’s something most people get wrong. They buy a good SPF, apply it diligently, and still end up burning. The problem isn’t usually the product – it’s the amount.

Studies consistently show that most people apply less than half the sunscreen they need to get the protection the label promises. Which means your SPF 50 is probably performing more like an SPF 15 or 20 in real life.

Here’s how to fix that.

The Full Body Rule

The NHS recommends that adults covering their entire body should apply at least six to eight teaspoons of sunscreen per application. That’s more than most people realise.

A useful shorthand: aim to fill a shot glass with sunscreen for a full-body application. For the face alone, you need roughly half a teaspoon – more than a thin layer, but less than you might think.

If you’re using a spray, make sure you’re covering the skin evenly and follow with a rub-in to ensure proper coverage. Sprays can give a false sense of security if you’re not thorough.

Don’t Forget the Bits That Get Missed

The ears. The back of the neck. The tops of the feet. The back of the knees. These are the spots that get burned and forgotten in equal measure. If you’re relying on someone else to do your back, make sure they’re being as generous as you would be.

For face, lip and hair protection, Malibu’s dedicated range makes it easier to cover the details without overdoing it on the body formula.

How Often Should You Reapply?

Every two hours as a minimum, and immediately after swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying. Sunscreen degrades with sun exposure and physical activity – reapplication isn’t optional, it’s how the protection actually works.

Set an alarm if you need to. It takes thirty seconds and saves you a significant amount of discomfort the next morning.

The Bottom Line

The SPF number on the bottle only delivers what it promises if you use enough of it, often enough. Get that right and the product does exactly what it says.
